Grade 2 Success for Derby Sale Graduate Jonbon

High profile Derby Sale graduate Jonbon made a successful seasonal debut in the Grade 2 Shloer Chase at Cheltenham on Sunday. It was another impressive display from Nicky Henderson’s charge, putting in a faultless round of jumping to run out an easy nine-length winner. It was a sixth win over fences, and an eleventh career win for the JP McManus-owned chaser.

The seven-year-old son of Walk In The Park was purchased for €140,000 at the 2019 Derby Sale by Paul Holden and Michael Shefflin from Church View Stables.

Croke Park was another successful Derby Sale graduate to make his mark at graded level when winning the Grade 3 Monksfield Novice Hurdle at Navan for Gordan Elliott and Gigginstown House Stud. The five-year-old was purchased for €150,000 by Milestone Stables and Ballyboy Stables at the Derby Sale in 2021 from Ballincurrig House Stud.

The Gavin Cromwell-trained Only By Night appears a mare with a big future judged on her win in the Listed Mares Bumper at Navan on Sunday. A graduate of the July Store Sale in 2021, the daughter of Affinisea cost €13,500 when bought by Cudgley Stud from Rathkenty Stud.

Broadway Boy was another graduate to win at Cheltenham last weekend, landing Saturday’s Listed Novice Chase by 20 lengths. The son of Malinas was purchased for €12,000 at the November National Hunt Sale by Rathbarry Stud from John Leahy. It was a fifth racecourse win for Broadway Boy, and a second win in three starts over fences for Nigel Twiston-Davies’s charge. He looks an exciting staying prospect for the future.

Tattersalls Ireland graduate Malina Girl also entered the Cheltenham winners enclosure when victorious in the featured Handicap Chase. Gavin Cromwell’s mare was purchased at the August National Hunt Sale for €7,500 from Grange Stables. That win was her fourth success over fences, adding to her win in the valuable Ulster National earlier in the year.

Nominations are now being taken for the Derby Sale 2024.
